Volunteering

Volunteering is more than filling time — it’s a compass. After treatment, many people feel ready and energized; many feel empty and unsure.

Addiction took up space in your day and meaning in your life. Volunteering gives both back: purpose and practice, service and steady small

victories that rebuild self-worth.

You don’t have to “fix” the world to make a difference. You just have to show up. That quiet, steady presence — folding towels, driving

someone to a meeting, leading a group, or lending an ear — becomes proof that you can be useful, trusted, and generous again.

Why volunteering helps recovery

  • Replaces old routines with new purpose. When the day no longer orbits the substance, volunteering becomes a reason to get up — a
  •
  • practical anchor for early recovery. Heals through service. Guilt, shame, and remorse are real. Helping others channels those feelings into
  •
  • constructive action and restores self-respect. Builds skill and confidence. Volunteering is practice: communication, timeliness, teamwork,
  •
  • and responsibility, skills employers and relationships notice. Expands your Recovery community. You meet new people in safe
  •
  • environments, which reduces isolation and strengthens protective social ties. Provides structure and accountability. Regular commitments,
  •
  • even small ones, support routine, reliability, and relapse prevention.

Types of volunteer roles at Cedar Rise

  • Peer support shifts: Sit with residents, help facilitate group check-ins, or co-host recovery circles.

  • Practical support: Help with meal prep, laundry, light cleaning, property upkeep, or donation sorting.

  • Transportation & errands: Drive residents to appointments, meetings, or job interviews.

  •  Event support: Staff open houses, fundraising events, or community outreach.

  • Mentoring & life skills: Lead or assist workshops in budgeting, resume-building, job-searching, or WRAP planning.

  • Administrative help: Phone lines, data entry, outreach, or social media support.

For those worried about stigma, relapse, or triggers

Volunteering at Cedar Rise is voluntary, supervised, and intentionally low-risk. We match tasks to comfort and stability levels. If you feel triggers or stress, talk to your recovery coach or supervisor immediately and we will adjust your role and support your needs.

Volunteer commitments & expectations

  • Background checks and orientation required for most roles. Training and supervision provided; you are not expected to “know it all.”
  • Confidentiality and respect for residents are mandatory. Clear start/stop times so volunteering doesn’t overwhelm recovery priorities.

What you’ll get back

A clearer purpose, a better resume, new sober friends, restored dignity, and the quiet pride of helping someone else stand a little straighter. Little by little, those gains become the scaffolding of a life that’s worth staying clean and sober for.
